Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL)
Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), carved out of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in 1972; is a Miniratna I CPSE under the aegis of Ministry of Mines. With an impeccable credential of over 48 years MECL is a notified mineral exploration agency as per section 4(1) of MMDR Amendment Act 2015, is mandated to undertake detailed exploration of mineral acreages and currently operates pan India with a portfolio of all the major and precious minerals, offering integrated mineral exploration services including preparation of Geological Reports and consultancies to Central Govt, State Govts and major mining CPSEs etc.
The authorised share capital and paid up equity of the company are Rs. 125.00 crore and Rs. 119.55 crore, respectively. The equity is fully held by Govt. of India. MECL’s registered office and Corporate Headquarter is at Nagpur, Maharashtra from where it manages the functioning of projects, the main production centres. To facilitate the prompt maintenance of plants and machineries deployed at various projects. MECL has Maintenance Centre and Central Manufacturing Centre at Nagpur to provide and supply of drilling bits and other drilling tools to drilling fleet.
MECL has been undertaking detailed exploration of coal, lignite, iron, manganese, bauxite, chromite, limestone, gold, diamond, copper, potash, PGE, and several other poly metallic deposits etc. MECL has state-of-the-art facilities under one roof in areas like (a) Environmental & remote sensing studies (b) Surface geophysical investigation facilities (c) all ground exploration facilities including diamond core drilling up to a depth of 1500 m (d) Borehole geophysical logging facilities, (e) Well equipped laboratories – Chemical, Physical and Petrological analysis (f) Advance software for geological & 3D ore body modelling and all exploration related activities,. MECL as part of its expansion plan has procured and deployed 37 nos. of hydrostatic drilling rigs and has also envisioned augmenting its exploration capability through procurement of more hydrostatic drilling machines, modern geophysical investigation equipment, advance geochemical laboratory equipment etc.
MECL on behalf of DMGs / DGMs of State Government prepares mineral exploration proposal for submission to National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), the funding mechanism created under MMDRA Act, 2015. After award of the assignment, MECL undertakes detailed mineral exploration activities and prepares Geological Reports which are handed over to the State Governments for auction of mineral blocks. MECL also undertakes detailed mineral exploration activities for various major Mining companies such as NALCO, HCL, MOIL, SAIL, HGML and other CPSEs and State Government PSUs.
With respect to exploration of Coal and Lignite, MECL undertakes the regional and detailed exploration of Coal blocks through a long-standing MoU with CMPDIL / Ministry of Coal. Extensive exploration is undertaken by MECL for preparation of Geological Reports of Coal blocks which is handed over to CMPDIL for allocation to the Coal miners.
Since inception, MECL has completed over 1538 projects of detailed mineral exploration, mine development. The exploration inputs are 12.51 million metres of drilling, 5.09 million metres of geophysical logging, 7179 sq.km. of detailed geological mapping and topographical survey and 0.29 million metres of exploratory & developmental mining. It has added 1,85,983 million tonnes of mineral resources to National Mineral Resources.
